An Apple A Day

October 19, 2008

An apple a day keeps the doctor away......

and since school has started, we have seen more of the doctor than we care to, so we are taking that age old advice. We headed to the nearest apple orchard to stock up for the season!

IMG_4511

Nick was our master picker....the apple of the day was "Mutsu", they are a cross between a Golden Delicious and a Japanese Indu apple.....great for baking and eating!

IMG_4514

Of course Sarah wanted to be the one to carry the 20lb box of apples.....it weighed almost as much as she does!

My creation

Along with apples, you could pick red raspberries. They were few and far between, so it took us a long time to fill one pint....but once again Nick saved the day. He had quite an eye for the ripe berries!

IMG_4562

On the way out they had pony rides! As soon as Sarah saw them, she went running over. I thought she might be scared but she walked right up. We put her on and a big smile came across her face in an instant!

IMG_4574

I was a little worried that she wouldn't know how to hold on or keep her balance, but she did great.

IMG_4563

They walked her around the ring 3 times.....she loved it and did not want to get off!

While we were standing there, Nick said..."Mom, we could put one of these rings in the backyard, we have enough room to keep a horse back there. Sarah's birthday is coming up and she would love a horse"

I had to laugh....like we could just run out and buy a horse for her birthday in four weeks! I told him maybe when she gets a little older we could sign her up for lessons, but that's as far as it goes. I think Nick was the one that wanted a horse, but Sarah's bday comes before his, so he thought it was worth a try!

After our day at the orchard, we came home and started some serious apple peeling and slicing. Apple Crisp is on the menu for tonight! In fact, we are off to eat some right now....come back tomorrow, I will post the recipe and pictures....it smells like heaven!

Hope you all enjoyed your weekend!

Lisa,
You do need to stock up on those apples!! Either that, or you'll need to start a co-pay savings account. :-)

These are GORGEOUS pictures!! I just love the photos of Sarah on the pony. She looks like a pro. And Nick - asking for a pony for his sister's birthday. That is just precious!

Have a great week!!

My dad always had a thing at auctions about running up the price on things (especially if it was for a charity). Well he was at a church auction and bought a HORSE...oops. Someone forgot to tell my dad we lived in the city and he brought the horse home and kept it in the backyard until a new home could be found. (Unfortunately this was before I was born). My siblings all have great memories of riding the horse in the backyard...don't you think Sarah and Nick deserve that???
She does look like a natural, and Nick can pick apples for it:)

We don't have apple orchard's like that and/or pumpkin patches for that matter :-( I saw a sign for a pumpkin patch in New Smyrna Beach this past WE and got all exited! Well, they had a few pumpkins laying around and that was about it. Nothing to write home about.
Hmm...today is the 20th - Happy Birthday Lisa!

She looks like a natural on that horse. I love the photos and I am so envious of everyone apple picking and baking. It is hot here and I don't even think apples grow in Texas!

Anyway, sounds like a good weekend. How is the potty training going?
